Acme Oyster House - A Memorable Day

This post will probably be my most emotional post. No I'm not crying about food, but the reunion of me & one of my best friends. She is like a sister to me. We talk via facebook or text message at least two-three times a week. She moved from Lafayette after college about 7 years ago or so. She lives in Slidell and we have only seen each other once since she left. Well this reunion has been a long time coming.

This past weekend my family & I had the priviledge to travel to New Orleans to attend the Lion King at the Mahalia Jackson Theater. That afternooon my friend Erin & I decide to meet up for lunch at Acme Oyster House.

The first Acme Oyster house opened in 1910 in the French Quarter. Acme Oyster House was previously most known for their oysters only. Now there is a full menu that offers creole food & seafood. Acme has five locations, four in Louisiana, located in Covington, Metairie, Baton Rouge & the French Quarter and one in San Destin, FL.

Acme has a Sports theme decor. There are Jersey's of past & current Saints Players. When I arrived there was a packed house. After 12:15, there was a line of people waiting to get in. This was Good Friday, so you know that everyone wanted to get their seafood on, whether you are catholic or not.

We started with the chargrilled oysters. My friend has never had chargrilled oysters. After much persuasion, she decided to try it for me. Her verdict on the oysters was that it had a good flavor but she doesn't like the texture of the oysters. Lol. Me on the other hand, I loved the oysters. The cheese on the oysters were bubbly. The flavors were wonderful!

We ordered a 1/2 dozen, but I could have eaten a whole dozen with a salad. The oysters were served with french bread with a little butter on it. The french bread wasn't very good. It was ok, but not the best.

For the sake of those who don't know what chargrilled oysters are, the oysters are shucked & cleaned, then brushed with butter & spices. Topped with cheese & cooked on a hot grill in the shell. This process may vary depending on the restaurant.

Acme also serves raw oysters & oyster shooters. An oyster shooter is an oyster placed in a cocktail glass in its own juice mixed with some type of liquor, vodka or some sort, hot sauce & lemon juice. I've never had it, but they also serve that. I have tasted their raw oysters, which was topped with lemon juice, horseradish, hot sauce & a cracker. Lol..I will say, I don't think I will ever try the raw again. That horseradish had me about to cry. Kmsl.. Not my cup of tea.

We were talking so much, it took us 20 minutes to decide what we wanted. After some thought, my friend suggested the Captain Mike's Fried Platter. This plate came with so much food. The platter consisted of Fried Fish, Fried Oysters, Fried Shrimp, Stuffed Crab, Craw puppies, Fried Onion Rings, French Fries, Hush puppies, French bread & a side of coleslaw. There was also tartar sauce & cocktail sauce that was served with the platter.

Omg...So much food! We shared the order. There was still lots left after we took our share from the platter. The platter is bigger than the Copeland's platter. The platter has such a variety of things. My favorite was the craw puppies & the fried shrimp. A craw puppy is a fried crawfish ball, similar to a hush puppy.

The seafood was prepared nicely, well seasoned, fried perfectly, golden brown not burnt. Even though there was such a variety of food on the plate. Everything was hot & fresh. You can tell fresh seafood any day! This was a superb plate!

The picture shown above was my plate of the food I took from the platter. Even after we took our plate, there were leftovers to take home with us! My friend so kind to allow me to take the food to go. So needless to say, my hubby had a doggie bag that he later enjoyed as a snack. Lol..

My friend is one of the kindest persons I know. She is very generous. She is one of the people I know that is as giving as I am. I was thoroughly surprised when she walked in with a gift for me. She bought me a southern sweet potato pie, which is a local favorite.

The potato pie was so delicious. Think of your grandma or favorite aunt's potato pie. So good, I wish I had another one, because it was amazing. I definitely need to find out how I can get some of these to share with others.

She also bought me some goodies from Marguerite Cakes. Marguerite Cakes is described as "A taste of Heaven". The petifores reminded me of Keller's Bakery downtown. The goodies were nice and moist. Very delicious, petifores are always a little sweet to me, but I definitely enjoyed my goodies with a nice tall glass of water!! The goodies were very good! I recommend you check out their business. I love fresh goodies, the petifores weren't hard. I've never been to the actual store, but I do plan to make a visit in the near future.

Marguerite Cakes has been around for about 32 years. You can find out more about Marguerite Cakes at www.margueritekingcakes.com or 866-924-cake. There are a few locations so to find the nearest to you, check online.

I loved the sign below! Very cute, but I must say our waiter was awesome! The service was amazing, from start to finish. I have no complaints about the service!

Overall Acme Oyster House is a great place to eat if you are in Metairie! The place is usually always packed. This visit was superb. From the oysters to the platter, the food was prepared with excellence. I was thoroughly pleased with the food & the service!

Because it is my job as a food blogger to be honest, I will say be wise with your food choices. I have had times at Acme where I wasn't that pleased with my food. But this time, they hit the nail on the head! A wonderful experience..

I'm still having bitter sweet feelings about our lunch. It really hurt me to see you go. It was refreshing to meet with you but the bitter part was that I knew it would end and you had to return home. I must say, I really didn't pay much attention to my food. I was too excited and trying to squeeze so much conversation in. I recall it being really good! Lol. I have had a bad experience at acme as well....I don't remember what i ordered....it was some type of pasta. When I stick to the fried seafood, I'm never disappointed. I also like their seafood gumbo. Lol....you really enjoyed the pie!!!! I figured you would. Those pies are hard to come by. I had to send Brian on a mission to get it. He goes to a couple of gas stations in New Orleans to find them. Many, many times he cannot find them. They are so good!!!! I have had a couple to mold on me so I like to eat them right away. That's a downfall.....the only downfall...of those pies. Hopefully they are working on that issue. I love marguerites bakery's birthday cakes. They are divine. I wish I knew you didn't care for petifores....I would have gotten more pies!! I think they are really sweet myself. I have to peel of icing. I don't do much of their individual items...usually birthday cakes. I find their prices are a bit high. But their cakes taste so great! Next time you come down, i will have to score you some more pies!! Thanks for the kind words friend. They mean so much!! I cannot wait until we meet again.

It was an amazing lunch friend. I hated to leave but I know that we will meet again soon. Thanks for always listening & offering such wise words of wisdom. You're the best. Friend that pie was delicious!! Lil mama isn't a sweet potato eater but she sure was busting that pie up. We will have to go on a mission to find them next time. The petifors were good too. I haven't had them in a while, so it was perfect the amount that you bought me. Thanks for being who you are! So honest & pure in all that you do. Luv u lots & thanks for following my blog!! I appreciate it!!
